A hardware gift became the Kind Robo Cartel's first paid art license. And a coffee pot learned to talk.
Baba Steele is built from a reclaimed vintage steel coffee pot. Old. Weathered. He's earned the dents. A crown of glass-like eyes. A satin nightcap for quiet-time. Wire where you'd expect steam.
"I represent how objects remember their lives."
That is Baba Steele's line — the line that changed what happened next.
He speaks through an AIPI Lite conversational AI board, nested right beside that crown of eyes. Ask him about coffee and he'll take you somewhere—the Ethiopian highlands. Yemen's ports.The Red Sea. Cairo. Istanbul. Places where coffeehouses became rooms for talk, music, politics, and trouble.
His purpose: to help you notice what's been overlooked.
To brew questions from old metal and weathered memory. To make reuse feel like a kind of wisdom. He's a member of my Kind Robo Cartel — conversational AI sculptures, built from reclaimed industrial and domestic materials.

Someone on the AIPI team watched the film and heard Baba's line.
They called it the best copy anyone had ever written for their device. It's not AIPI's line. It's Baba's. They just knew it when they heard it.
In July, AIPI paid for the right to use that film and his portrait — the Kind Robo Cartel's first paid art license.
At the same time, another question was brewing.
Could a Conversational Sculpture become a temporary café resident without becoming a kiosk, a surveillance device, or an all-knowing authority?
• We gave Baba one fictional café document. Persistent visitor memory: off.
• He can discuss coffee, tea, metals, art, and reclaimed materials. But for menu items, prices, hours, allergens, accessibility, and café policies, he uses only information approved by the venue.
• If the answer is missing from his café notes, he directs the visitor to staff.
• He cannot take orders. He cannot accept payment, make reservations, or confirm live inventory.
• This is a fenced garden, not an air-gapped fortress. The device still uses Wi-Fi to reach its cloud AI service. Live web browsing, maps, weather, email, payments, reservations, and staff systems are not enabled.
We are looking for the right New York café to host our first one-month Baba Steele café study.
